Fiat 500 Mileage Flashing On Speedo

Recommended Posts

Just got a 2012 model in, mileage flashes constantly on the speedometer, anyone had this problem? Driven a fair amount in it, still persists, knocked ignition on and off, still persists, removed battery for ten mins........ Still persists!

No more fiat's!

Try reprogramming the whole car.

Does everything work i.e radio, bluetooth, steering wheel buttons, parking sensors etc?

Yes it needs it’s proxy alignment done, it’s a simple enough job on proper fiat diagnostics.

hi

its usually because someone has swapped the dash pod with a lower mileage unit

have you done all checks to certainer mileage

pre buying

sorry to be the purveyor but it might be wise to backtrack on the deal

Everything works except the blue and me button on the steering wheel

Although I'd still be trying to reprogram the whole car first.

these cars have eeprom in the speedo head, have done since 1999 to stop clocking

i cant believe blue would corrupt this

if im honest and i was being laid back

the car is clocked]

end of

to stop any litigation

in my opinion

Could well have been clocked or had some wanker mileage device fitted to the speedo but the flashing mileage on these also indicates a can bus error. The fact the blue and me button is not working would also suggest a can bus error.

Either way I'm thinking can bus error. Whether this is caused by clocking, faulty ecu or programming error I don't know.

flashing mileage shows as said earlier a proxy alinement's error

ie bci  isnt agreeing with speedo head

ie somethings changed

Agree with this 100%. Often happens after a battery change.

Very common on Fiat and later Ford KA. It can be affected by the blue & me. As above proxy alignment on Fiat diagnostics.

Thanks for the replies everyone, checked mot history etc and all appears fine. I'll get it hooked up for a proxy alignment and go from there.

Got this problem and more........... had new battery fitted in January and very soon had mile light flashing then lost Bluetooth, irritating but not life changing, then clock light starts flashing. Went away for two weeks, upon return car was lifeless. Charged battery but kept draining. Took to garage and after checking battery they diagnosed ecu fault ( checked by specialist) which is going to cost about £800 for new unit, although mechanic is trying to source secondhand one. Don’t like to question this but having read these comments I’m wondering whether it could actually be faulty battery, and where would that leave me after I’ve paid out for new ecu and still got a fault?

First off, disconnect the battery for 20 mins, reconnect and then see if that resets it.

Also, on some of the other forums, playing around with the factory sound system (aftermarket head unit, speakers etc) can also cause the flash. Maybe someone changed the stereo and replaced it back to standard when selling the car?

the factory head units cause parasitic drain in fiats like these

highly unlikely to be a bsi problem

ideally you need an auto electrician to isolate the drain ie disconnect ice unit and go from there

so many people just want to blame ecus makes me think they have a vested interest (kickback~)

If bluetooth isn't operating it'll be the Blue and Me unit - the speedos flash on Fiat and Alfa to indicate a none engine related issue. We've replaced a good few blue and me units. Can buy a second hand one, plug and play and they're located behind the glovebox, once fitted do a proxy alignment, it would be worth doing this first just to see if it cures the issue. Very common and we've replaced around 10 this year. We normally find its been caused by some aftermarket electric item been fitted, most common on the Punto is an insurance black box but others are hard wired dashcams, different head units etc. Any decent diagnostic machine will perform the proxy alignment, we use Snapon.

Thanks @James Bush, thats really helpful.

Approx. how much am I expecting to pay for a blue and me unit including fitting?

On a side note, does the flashing mileage / blue and me issue affect the battery at all? I've recently installed a new battery and it seems to die if car is not used within 3 - 5 days.

Thanks
