RADIO 2 DJ Chris Evans smashed records at an RM Auction when he bought a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT for nearly £5m.

The SWB California Spyder sold for €7,040,000 – £4,970,000 – at the event on Saturday.

Collectors from across the globe descended on Maranello, Italy, for the second annual ‘Ferrari Leggenda e Passione’ event.

The RM Auction, in association with Sotheby’s, put under the hammer an unrivalled collection of historic Ferraris and Maseratis at the legendary home of the Prancing Horse.

Chris Evans, accompanied by his wife, golf pro and writer Natasha Shishmanian, attended the Gala reception where he fell for the considerable charms the 250 GT. The following day, he made a successful bid for his dream machine, which will now take pride of place in his own celebrated collection.

RM Auctions returns to London for its second Automobiles of London sale this October. Full details will be announced soon.
