Official: 300bhp Cayman

Time 9:09 am, August 5, 2008

040808por.jpgPORSCHE’S Cayman is upping the power stakes, with a new limited edition that smashes the 300bhp barrier.

The Cayman S Sport is an individually-numbered special, which hits dealer showrooms next month.

It’s the 3.4-litre flat six’s retuning to 303bhp (an engine already seen in the Boxster RS 60) which gains the headlines: Porsche always said the Cayman would never challenge the 911 for power – but, of course, as the latest 911 has itself has a power boost, this leaves a window for a faster Cayman.

Porsche hasn’t released performance figures yet, but we’d expect low-5s to 60mph.

Visually, it’s a feast, with lots of 911 GT3 RS cues. Orange or green paint is pure GT3 RS, as is model designation in black side graphics. Black extends to the special 19-inch wheels, mirrors and air intake grilles, too.

Alcantara swathes the interior, including the steering wheel, handbrake and gearknob. And the instrument pack loses its pod surround, for more racy purpose.

Standard is PASM suspension, the active set-up that makes a brilliant car even more so. This also lowers it by 10mm – and 5mm spacers for the rear wheels push them further outwards, enhancing the squat stance.

Only 700 will be available, worldwide, each designated by a number on the glovebox. Indeed, the only stumbling block we can see is the price: £49,890…
