CLASSIC car sales, it seems, are immune from tightening financial pressures.
BCA’s latest specialist classic auction recorded yet another good month, with 37 cars selling on a 65 per cent conversion rate.
What sort of money are we talking? Well, a 1979 Ferrari 308 GTS went for £18,425, the top price recorded on the day. It had, however, done only 27,000 miles.
Slightly more affordable was a 1967 Volvo P1800S. ‘The Saint’ model sounded like something to be avoided – it had no paperwork or history. But great condition helped it to £8050. That’s over twice the top estimate.
A 1986 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth made £6950, and even a 1996 Escort RS 2000 4×4 made £2750. Never underestimate the appeal of the ‘right’ modern classic.
As Classics from BCA manager Robin Lawton said: ‘A number of cars sold for well above their estimate, which suggests there is a ready market for interesting and unusual vehicles, despite the current economic conditions.’
This one stood out for us, though. A 1990 BMW 316i Automatic. Yes, it had covered just 9490 miles, by the original company chairman owner. It was totally immaculate and original. But, even so, £3100?
