NISSAN’S Sunderland plant has been given a multi-million pound Government cash boost safeguarding hundreds of jobs and leading to the production of a new model.

The company will start production of an all-new compact car at the factory starting in 2010, when manufacturing of the current Micra ends.

Business Secretary John Hutton announced that the Government would support the project with a contribution of £6.2 million – with the whole investment in the UK totalling over £55m.

The new deal was unveiled on Tuesday during a visit by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to Nissan’s European Design Centre in Paddington, London with Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.

The PM said: ‘Nissan is a global manufacturer with strong roots in Britain and I’m pleased to welcome Nissan’s new investment in the UK.

‘Sunderland’s success shows what an innovative, talented and highly committed workforce can achieve, and reaffirms the UK’s position as a strong player in the global car industry.’

The decision to build a new small SUV at the factory builds on the success of the Qashqai, which is already being produced on Wearside.

Mr Ghosn said: ‘By delivering on tough commitments, our employees at Sunderland have demonstrated our plant can be a globally competitive centre for the production of high-value products.’

Nissan will compete in the entry-car market with a dedicated new ‘A platform’ that will be used for at least three models, including the next generation of Micra.
