170108vw.jpgSUMMER is proving to be a complete washout.

But this isn’t stopping buyers from choosing record numbers of open-top motors.

Car supermarket Motorpoint reports a rise in convertible sales of nearly a fifth between June and August, compared with last year.

Sales of ‘soft tops’ such as the Saab 9-3 remain steady; it’s coupe-convertibles that are driving this growth. That’s models such as the Renault Megane CC, Volkswagen Eos and Peugeot 207 CC.

David Shelton, MD of Motorpoint, said: ‘You would imagine, given the amount of rain we’ve had so far this summer, that people would be put off buying cabriolets. But that doesn’t seem to be case, with sales of cabriolets at the highest level for many years.’

‘I can only imagine what our sales would be like if we were to get a decent spell of weather. Let’s hope for everyone’s sake that we get to find out!’
