Small cars getting bigger!

Time 6:38 am, February 6, 2009

small-cars-getting-biggerSMALL cars are underlining their dominance of the new car market, with further increases in market share.

In January, the supermini segment experienced declines well below the market average, to boost TOTAL market share to 35.6 per cent.

What’s more, sales in the mini segment – vehicles such as the Toyota Aygo and Ford Ka – ROSE by 40.8 per cent!

Ford’s Fiesta was the top car overall. It was the UK’s best seller for the THIRD MONTH RUNNING. The Vauxhall Corsa, Peugeot 207 and Honda Jazz were also strongly represented in the top 10 sales figures.

Interesting revelations from the January winners chart, too. Yes, there were some manufacturers who saw sales increase.

Well, make that 1 manufacturer – but Hyundai’s 5.6 per cent sales rise is still worth celebrating.

Toyota will be pleased to see a decline of only 1.4 per cent too, while Nissan dealers will be buoyed by a manageable fall of 3 per cent.

Otherwise, it’s grim high double figure declines for many brands.  We’ll cover the biggest falls elsewhere – but, safe to say, if you’re a car dealer with a strong range of small cars, you’re best placed to weather the tough times ahead.
