Industry heavyweight Duncan McPhee has been confirmed as the new CEO of Athenea as the dealer group continues to bring Brayleys Cars and Johnsons Cars together under a single brand.

Car Dealer reported six months ago that McPhee had quit his role as chief operating officer at the loss making Hendy Group in order to take up a chief executive role elsewhere.

While at the time, his destination was kept under wraps, it has now been confirmed he will join Athenea on November 16.

Prior to joining Hendy, McPhee spent almost 16 years at Lookers, holding a number of operational and franchise leadership roles before becoming chief operating officer in 2021.

His appointment comes as Athenea continues to integrate Brayleys and Johnsons into a single operating business following the launch of the new group name earlier this year.

Amro Jayousi, speaking on behalf of Athenea’s board, said: ‘We have brought together two successful dealer groups, launched the Athenea brand and established a clear strategy for sustainable growth.

‘Duncan’s track record of leading large-scale automotive retail operations, developing strong manufacturer partnerships and delivering operational excellence makes him the ideal person to lead the next chapter.’

McPhee said he was looking forward to helping the firm take its next step.

He said: ‘Athenea has already built significant momentum and has a compelling vision for the future.

‘The combination of strong OEM partnerships, ambitious growth plans and a clear commitment to colleagues and customers creates an exciting platform for long-term success.

“I am looking forward to joining the team and working with colleagues across the group as we continue to strengthen our existing brands, welcome new franchise partners and deliver a consistently outstanding experience for customers.

‘There is tremendous opportunity ahead, and I am excited to help shape the next stage of Athenea’s journey.’
