EV choice has more than doubled over the past three years, according to new data from the SMMT.
The trade body has today (Sept 23) released new findings that show that manufacturers are now launching the equivalent of a new model every fortnight.
A total of 85 new battery electric vehicle (BEV) models have reached the UK market since 2023, giving buyers the choice of 171 different options.
They are joined by 109 plug-in hybrids and 52 conventional hybrids, meaning more than three-quarters of the 385 models currently on sale benefit from some kind of electrification.
The research also found that average latest-generation EV can now travel more than 300 miles on a single charge – over double what the average driver covers in a week.
The SMMT says the expansion can be put down to continued manufacturer investment, as well as government initiatives like the Electric Car Grant.
SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: ‘Britain’s new car market has never offered so much choice, with a new electric model arriving every fortnight and zero emission motoring now available in every shape and size of vehicle.
‘Industry investment is delivering the products, performance and range drivers need, while compelling offers are helping more people make the switch.
‘For those still facing barriers or uncertainty, the huge range of hybrid and lower emission models means drivers can still make drastic cuts to their carbon footprint, keeping the UK firmly on the road to net zero.’
The latest new car models will be on display at today’s SMMT Drive Live event, where nine in 10 of the vehicles available to test drive are electrified.
