KGM believes its new electric Musso could help dealers sell pick-ups to a much wider group of customers as changes to the tax treatment of traditional double-cabs reshape the market.
The Korean brand, formerly known as SsangYong, says interest in the new Musso EV is coming not only from its traditional commercial vehicle audience, but from national fleets, SMEs and private and lifestyle buyers.
Sales director Clive Messenger said the arrival of electric pick-ups at the same time as major changes to the taxation of combustion-engined double-cab models had created an opportunity to reach customers who may previously have looked elsewhere.
Speaking at the GreenFleet Mythbuster EV Rally 2026, Messenger said KGM had deliberately positioned the Musso EV at the same price point as its diesel Musso range, allowing buyers to make the decision based on their individual use and tax position rather than face a significant premium for going electric.
‘Electric pick-up trucks are still a new and emerging vehicle category in the UK, and they’ve been introduced at a time when there have been significant changes to personal taxation on double-cab pick-ups,’ he said.
‘When we decided to bring the Musso EV into the market, it was very important to us to make it the same price as our award-winning combustion-engine diesel Musso range, so the customer can decide what powertrain is right for them depending on their own circumstances.’
The Musso EV is priced from £39,995 including VAT and the £5,000 Plug-in Van Grant, which KGM says makes it the cheapest electric pick-up currently available in the UK.
For business users, however, he says the bigger selling point could be taxation.
KGM claims the Musso EV has the lowest Benefit-in-Kind charge of any commercial vehicle in the UK, starting at around £30 per month for a 20% taxpayer in 2026/27.
That gives dealers a different proposition to put in front of buyers who might previously have chosen a diesel double-cab as both a work vehicle and company car.
Messenger said: ‘It does everything you need. It’s got 2.3-tonne towing capacity, a 240-mile-plus range, 690kg of payload capacity.
‘It’s just a fantastic vehicle to drive with dynamic 4WD and direct EV power, and people can be confident in it.
‘On top of that, there are some significant taxation benefits to the individual if they go electric. Regarding BIK, the Musso EV has the lowest of any commercial vehicle in the UK – just £30 a month for a 20% taxpayer – that’s less than a pound a day.’
While KGM still sees fleets and businesses as an important audience, Messenger said early interest suggested the electric model could stretch the Musso name beyond its traditional customer base.
‘The Musso EV ticks a lot of boxes, and it is a real opportunity for a wide range of users,’ he said.
‘We are seeing that it is being considered not just by National Fleet & SME operators, but also by private and lifestyle customers.’
That potentially gives KGM dealers two different Musso propositions rather than simply replacing diesel sales with electric ones, with the EV able to target customers attracted by its tax position and SUV-like driving experience while the combustion-engined model remains available for buyers whose usage better suits diesel.
It also forms part of KGM’s wider push into electrified vehicles as the manufacturer attempts to grow its presence in the UK under its new identity.
