Omoda and Jaecoo have strengthened their warranty offering after their previous protection came in for strong criticism from industry experts.
The Chinese brands say they have ‘listened to feedback from customers, retailers and aftersales partners’ and will now extend cover to a number of key components.
Changes include protection on infotainment units, fuel pumps, alternators, starter motors and water pumps to seven years or 100,000 miles.
It comes after Warrantywise CEO Lawrence Whittaker previously publicly raised concerns about the warranty provisions on Omoda and Jaecoo vehicles.
Earlier this year, Whittaker questioned why a number of components commonly expected to be covered by a manufacturer’s main warranty had shorter limits on Jaecoo and Omoda vehicles.
He has now welcomed the changes, saying the firm’s have ‘listened to both customers and the market’.
Writing on LinkedIn, he said: ‘Three months ago I posted about concerns regarding the warranty provisions on Omoda & Jaecoo vehicles.
‘At the time, I was very surprised to find that a number of components commonly expected to be covered by a manufacturer’s main warranty, including infotainment units, fuel pumps, alternators, starter motors and water pumps, were limited to just three years or 40,000 miles.
‘Fast forward to today and Omoda & Jaecoo have announced a significant enhancement to their warranty cover. Many of the components previously limited to three years/40,000 miles will now benefit from the full seven year/100,000 mile vehicle warranty, with the changes also being applied to vehicles already sold in the UK.
‘Credit where it’s due. Companies don’t always respond to customer feedback, but in this case Omoda & Jaecoo appear to have listened to both customers and the market.
‘A stronger warranty benefits everyone: owners, retailers and ultimately the brand itself. It will be interesting to see whether this increased confidence in the product is reflected in customer satisfaction and long-term reliability.’
What’s changed?
Under the revised terms, Omoda and Jaecoo will extend seven-year/100,000-mile cover to the A/C compressor, alternator, brake calipers, catalytic converter, infotainment unit, exhaust system, fuel injectors, fuel pump, oil pump, shock absorbers, starter motor, track rod ends, water pump, wheel bearings and window regulators.
All of the components had previously only been covered for three years or 40,000 miles.
Cover for bushes and other rubber components will also increase from three years/40,000 miles to seven years/60,000 miles, while ball joints will receive the same seven-year/60,000-mile limit.
The changes are being applied retrospectively to every Omoda and Jaecoo vehicle sold in the UK since the brands launched.
Explaining the decision, Victor Zhang, managing director of Omoda and Jaecoo UK, said: ‘The UK is one of the most competitive automotive markets in the world, and from day one we’ve been committed to listening to our customers and continually improving the ownership journey.
‘After two years of learning from our growing customer base and retailer network, we’ve reviewed our warranty offering and made it even stronger.
‘By extending cover on a wider range of components – and applying those changes to every Omoda and Jaecoo we’ve sold in the UK – we’re demonstrating our long-term commitment to our customers while reinforcing our confidence in the quality, engineering and reliability of our vehicles.’
