A car salesman has lost his job after being caught driving at twice the legal drink-drive limit.

Emran Miah, 35, was stopped by police in Cumbria shortly before midnight on September 5 after an officer spotted him driving erratically in a Volkswagen T-Cross Match.

The News and Star reports that the salesman was arrested after failing a roadside breathalyser, before later blowing exactly twice the legal limit in a subsequent breath test at the police station.

He has now appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

The court heard that on the night of the incident, Miah accelerated harshly before driving through a no-entry sign into Cecil Street and stalling on a mini roundabout.

Defence solicitor Geoff Lockerbie told the court that Miah had worked in car sales but lost his job following the offence.

He said Miah had never intended to drive after drinking but had decided to help a friend who telephoned him.

‘He had only just started driving from a parked position. He did not get very far,’ Lockerbie told the court.

He added that Miah’s family lived outside Cumbria and that he was currently unable to look for alternative employment.

Car Dealer understands that he had been working as a salesman for Lloyd Motor Company in Carlisle at the time of the offence.

Miah was fined £400 and ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs and a £160 surcharge.

He was also disqualified from driving for 18 months and offered the opportunity to attend a drink-drive rehabilitation course, which could potentially reduce his ban by 18 weeks.

Sentencing him, district judge Philip Holden said Miah had a considerable amount of alcohol in his system and that his driving had been poor.

The judge accepted that Miah had no previous convictions and took into account the impact the offence would have on his employment.
