BMW insists German agency delay will not derail wider rollout as UK switch remains on track

BMW has insisted a fresh delay to agency sales in Germany will not derail its wider rollout, with the manufacturer telling Car Dealer that the transition will still begin from mid-2027.

The reassurance comes after German publication Manager Magazin reported that BMW had pushed back the introduction of agency in its home market again, with dealers now not expected to make the switch before July 1, 2028.

German BMW dealers were reportedly informed of the revised timetable at the beginning of August, although the manufacturer has not officially confirmed the new date.

However, BMW Group UK has told Car Dealer that the wider rollout remains scheduled to begin next year, although it has yet to reveal exactly when British BMW dealers will make the switch.

A spokesman said: ‘We strongly believe that transitioning to the agency model is the right move for the BMW Group.

‘While we have not yet communicated the exact start date for individual markets, the BMW brand will transition to the agency model in phases from mid-2027.’

BMW had originally planned to begin moving sales of its namesake brand onto agency from 2026, following the introduction of the model across Mini’s European network.

Mini began the process in Italy, Poland and Sweden in January 2024, before agency was rolled out to further European markets.

In the UK, Mini made the switch in March 2025 and BMW Group UK says the experience has proved the model can work for customers and dealers.

The spokesman added: ‘Mini successfully introduced the agency sales model in the UK in March 2025 as part of a phased rollout across Europe.

‘This has proven that our model is effective and is designed to benefit customers, our retail partners and the BMW Group.’

BMW first outlined its plans for a major overhaul of its European sales model in 2023, with Mini chosen to lead the transition before the system was extended to the larger BMW network.
