Auto Trader adds insurance write-off info to adverts

Time 10:09 am, April 22, 2014

catcd-saAUTO Trader has introduced visual symbols on adverts listed on its website for cars that have been written-off.

Taking the form of a yellow circle displaying either the letter C (for Category C) or D (for Category D), the icon will be presented on every page listing the car, including searches on mobile devices. Similar changes will be applied to motorcycles and vans in the near future.

The move follows an agreement to use MIAFTR (Motor Insurance Anti Fraud and Theft Register) data. Auto Trader says this will bring greater transparency for buyers by automating the process for dealers advertising stock.

‘Dealers are already required by law to declare category C or D cars to buyers, and many have approached us calling for this change,’ said Jason Biffin, Auto Trader consumer marketplace director. ‘So we have worked closely with them to set up a fully automated process to make it as easy as possible. The prominent icon will also benefit consumers, delivering a message of caution, enabling them to make a fully informed decision about the vehicle they intend to buy.’

Auto Trader is encouraging dealers to provide as much information as they can about the car’s condition. Many buyers are also unclear about what each category means, so the icon can be hovered over to reveal further information. A Q&A section on the Auto Trader site will host further information.

‘While I am proud of the positive step we are taking, we should be careful not to demonise those who sell vehicles that have been made fully roadworthy,’ added Biffin.

‘However, all reputable businesses will recognise how important it is to prevent rogue traders – or individuals – from omitting this information from their listing.’
