Sky warns some roles will be cut after £1.6bn takeover of ITV broadcasting arm

Sky has warned over job cuts and said it will look to save £200m in costs following its £1.6bn deal to buy ITV’s media and entertainment arm.

The media and pay TV broadcaster did not say how many roles would be at risk, but said there would be cuts in corporate and commercial divisions, where there is overlap.

The deal will see Sky buy ITV’s terrestrial TV channels and streaming service ITVX. But it does not include its production arm, ITV Studios, which makes shows including I’m A Celebrity and the popular drama Mr Bates Vs The Post Office.

EasyJet shares surge after reaching outline £5.5bn buyout proposal from US firm

EasyJet is set to become the latest British company fall into foreign hands after reaching an agreement in principle to a proposed takeover worth up to £5.5bn from US suitor Castlelake.

The Luton-based carrier said on Sunday the £6.90-a-share approach, the fifth from the US investment firm, was ‘at a value that the board would be minded to recommend to easyJet shareholders’ should a formal offer be tabled.

Castlelake now has until 5pm on August 3 to make a firm bid for easyJet or walk away under City takeover rules after easyJet requested for the offer deadline to be extended.

Bentley set to expand model line-up with ‘Torcal’ SUV

Bentley is expanding its model line-up with a new addition to the SUV market with the Torcal.

Details on the Torcal are limited at this stage, though its name has been taken from the Spanish landmark, El Torcal de Antequera, which is a formation of stacked rocks and cliffs. A dark teaser image, above, showed a close-up of the car’s tailgate.

The British firm has not revealed the Torcal’s powertrain options, though it’s likely to use an electric setup and will be the first Bentley EV. It’ll make its world debut in London on September 23.

Russia’s ‘reckless’ actions run the risk of triggering an escalation in tensions with Nato, Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis warned after one of Vladimir Putin’s aircraft dropped sonar buoys near the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales.

Two F-35 fighter jets were launched to intercept the Russian Bear-F plane during the incident off the coast of Norway on Thursday last week.

Harry set to discover ruling in Daily Mail case after he returns to UK

The Duke of Sussex is set to discover the result of his High Court case against the Daily Mail’s publisher as he returns to the UK.

Harry arrived in the UK on Monday evening and so will be in the country when the judgment is published on Tuesday afternoon, after an 11-week trial earlier this year in his claim against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) over alleged unlawful information gathering.

ANL strongly denies the claims and defended the case, saying it ‘has established a complete defence to all parts of the claims on the merits’ and that the cases have been brought too late. Judge Mr Justice Nicklin will give his written ruling on the case via email at 2pm.
