CARWOW has released findings which show which cars British motorists favour region-by-region, based on the cars purchased through the website this summer.
The findings display some interesting results, with the Ford Fiesta, pictured, and Nissan Qashqai proving to be the UK’s most popular cars.
The north prefers the small Ford, whilst the south favours the venerable Nissan crossover.
Specifically, Blackburn, Bolton, Carlisle, Derby, Durham, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Preston and Sheffield are amongst the northern cities that the Ford is most popular in, whilst the Qashqai is favoured by southern areas including Cambridge, Croydon, Exeter, Guildford, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Reading and Worcester.
Of particular interest is the fact that Sunderland – where the Qashqai is built – favours the Nissan, whilst the surrounding areas follow the northern trend of preferring the Fiesta. Meanwhile, in Essex, where Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre is based, the Fiesta is particularly popular, especially in Romford, Colchester and Southend. This trend isn’t reserved for Britain’s top two cars either – the Vauxhall Mokka is popular in Luton, where Vauxhall is headquartered.
By producing detailed maps, Carwow’s report shows the difference in taste and requirements nationwide. For instance, the Audi Q5 is favoured in Alderly Edge, perhaps a by-product of the village’s popularity with North West-based premiership footballers. This differs with Manchester’s overall choice – the Volkswagen Polo.
In London, the VW Golf takes the top spot, but in the affluent district of Knightsbridge the Range Rover Sport is the vehicle of choice. The Land Rover Discovery is also, bafflingly, popular in many of Central London’s most congested districts.
James Hind, CEO of Carwow, said: ‘Every month we see just under 100,000 new cars configured on carwow.co.uk, which gives us a real insight to car-buying habits and trends across Britain.’
