Used EVs are taking up an increasing share of dealer forecourts as buyer interest in electric cars continues to grow, new data from Cazoo has revealed.

The online marketplace’s latest Market View found EVs accounted for 7.5% of all used cars listed in August – an 8% increase compared with July and 17.5% higher than a year ago.

The figures continue a trend of improving used EV availability since May, with electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid models now making up almost one in five cars stocked by dealers.

The data dove-tails with a Car Dealer Live interview with Cazana, which said used EV stock levels were increasing but also selling quickly.

In the Cazoo data, Tesla leads the charge, with increased availability of used Model Ys and Model 3s helping the American manufacturer become the most heavily stocked EV brand on Cazoo.

It was followed by MG, Vauxhall, BMW and Hyundai.

There are also signs that growing supply is being met by increased interest from buyers.

EVs accounted for 3.6% of buyer searches in August, more than double the 1.7% recorded a year earlier.

Hybrid searches also increased, rising from 5.4% to 6.9%.

However, petrol and diesel cars continue to dominate the used market.

Petrol remained the most popular fuel type among buyers, although its share of views fell from 51.1% to 45.2% year-on-year.

Diesel moved in the opposite direction, increasing its share from 41.8% to 44.3%.

Cazoo chief marketing officer Lucy Tugby said: ‘Our Market View analysis points to growing buyer interest in EVs, supported by improved availability and stable prices, making them a more accessible consideration for some buyers.

‘ICE models still account for the lion’s share of dealer inventories and ad views, with diesel remaining a strong draw for many used car buyers, despite falling out of favour in the new car market.’

The wider used market remained largely stable throughout August, despite the summer holiday period traditionally making it a challenging month for retailers.

The average advertised used-car price on Cazoo edged up by just £33, or 0.2%, month-on-month to £17,424. That was still 1.5% lower than a year ago.

Car supermarkets recorded the biggest monthly increase, with average prices climbing 1.6% to £16,725.

Franchised dealers saw prices rise 0.9% to £22,491, while independents recorded a 0.3% monthly decline to £14,204. Independent dealer prices were nevertheless 9.4% higher than in August last year.

At model level, older Ford Fiestas were among the biggest risers. Petrol examples aged between 12 and 14 years increased 3.3% to an average £4,677.

At the other end of the scale, diesel Range Rover Evoques aged six to eight years dropped 3.3% to £14,118.

Dealer inventory levels were also broadly unchanged, with the average number of cars in stock slipping from 58 in July to 57 in August. That remained ahead of the 54-car average recorded a year earlier.

Ford was the most viewed brand on Cazoo during the month, ahead of Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Vauxhall.

Tugby added that stable pricing and inventory levels should give retailers ‘a solid start to September’, with the plate change expected to generate increased buyer activity.
