XPeng is to take control of its UK operations as the Chinese carmaker moves away from the distributor-led model which launched the brand in Britain.

The manufacturer has agreed a new arrangement with International Motors, which will see it establish a National Sales Company and assume responsibility for the strategic and commercial development of the brand in the UK.

International Motors will remain involved in the business and continue to provide operational services and local distribution expertise.

XPeng says the change reflects its growing scale in the UK and will allow it to increase investment in areas including its dealer network, marketing and customer experience.

The new arrangement is intended to retain the infrastructure it has already established while handing greater control to the manufacturer.

Confirming the move, Elvis Cheng, general manager of XPeng North Eastern Europe, said: ‘The establishment of our UK National Sales Company marks an important next step in XPeng’s long-term commitment to the market.

‘XPeng recognises International Motors’ important contribution and valuable role in successfully launching XPeng in the UK and creating strong foundations for future growth.

‘By combining direct XPeng leadership and investment with International Motors’ proven local capabilities, we are creating the right structure to scale the brand, strengthen the customer experience and bring our next generation of intelligent vehicles to more customers across the UK.’

The shake-up comes as XPeng prepares to broaden its UK model line-up.

Among the cars heading to Britain are the X9 seven-seat MPV and the recently announced L03 SUV coupe, with the manufacturer promising further expansion of its portfolio.

William Brown, managing director of International Motors, said the new arrangement would provide XPeng’s UK operation with greater direct backing from the manufacturer while maintaining continuity for dealers and customers.

He added: ‘This agreement is good news for XPeng, its retailers and its customers in the UK.
