Used car values revealed

Time 12:04 pm, November 28, 2008

used car values revealedUSED car depreciation has been uncovered in a new table released by EurotaxGlass’s.

The car holding the honour of being the UK’s biggest depreciator? Alfa Romeo’s 166.

After three years, it retains just 12 per cent.

This contrasts with the MINI One D, which retains 63 per cent. That’s better than any other used car on the market.

Proof, says EurotaxGlass’s, of how important a strong image, low running costs and high perceived quality is.

It is also, says managing editor Adrian Rushmore, a good compromise for those downsizing from larger, more expensive premium models.

This is still, though, a slip from last year’s 71 per cent for the model. A loss of £600, in other words. Even this car can’t escape the market downturn.

The other lowest depreciators are largely small, economical, affordable models. The Citroen C1, for example, has better retained values than a Ferrari and a Lamborghini.

Residual Value Top 10

1 BMW MINI One D 3dr 63.2 per cent
2 Citroen C1 1.0/1.4 TD 3/5dr 61.2 per cent
3 Ferrari F430 Coupe/Spider 60.9 per cent
4 Toyota Aygo 1.0 3/5dr 60.6 per cent
5 Peugeot 107 1.0 3/5dr 57.4 per cent
6 Smart 700 56.7 per cent
7 SEAT Leon 1.9TDI/2.0 TDI 5dr 55.4 per cent
8 Lamborghini Murcielago 6.2 Coupe 55.2 per cent
9 Toyota Prius 1.5 Hybrid T4 5dr 55.0 per cent
10 Porsche 911 Carrera 2/4 (997) Coupe/Cabriolet 54.8 per cent

As for the biggest depreciators, it’s a sorry bunch. Here, obsolete brands or cars dominate.

But they do offer tremendous value for money. Dealers selling lower-priced models should look to the Rover 75 1.8T Contemporary SE.

New, this cost nearly £23,000.

Today, it can be bought for £3,300. That’s depreciation, in three years, of £19,400. Yet in another 3 years’ time, says Rushmore, dealers will still give £1000 for it.
