This year’s Used Car Awards will be a celebration of all that is good in our industry, says Car Dealer magazine editor Colin Channon
FROM little acorns, my old English teacher used to tell me, mighty oaks do grow.
Always seemed a pretty lousy saying to me. Might as well say from one tiddly little weed, a massive garden of weeds will grow. Because I know from personal experience that is true.
But as far as the Used Car Awards is concerned, the acorn analogy works well.
It was a germ of an idea originally. But the seed was sown. The acorn, in year one at The Brewery, saw 360 used-car dealers turn up to party and to celebrate successes.
In year two, word had got around. They weren’t the awards dealers needed to be SEEN at. They were the awards they wanted to BE at. And, more importantly, wanted to win.
So 430 used-car dealers turned up.
This year will be the biggest – and the best. And it keeps getting bigger because more and more dealers want to be there.
We’ll have more than 550 dealers trying to win awards, catching up with colleagues, celebrating the best in the business, laughing at Mike Brewer’s jokes (well, maybe not that…..) and partying into the early hours. It’s a popular event because it’s more than an awards ceremony. It highlights everything that’s good about the automotive industry at the grass roots.
The night, of course, celebrates best practice. It celebrates success. But we never forget we’re Car Dealer magazine, and that means having a bit of fun along the way. So the Used Car Awards is also a chance to catch up with mates, have a good gossip, bitch about some of the people in the industry – go on, admit it, that’s some of the best bits…. – and share notes. It adds up to a pretty good night out.
And we’ll be doing it all again on November 30. I’m looking forward to seeing you there. The one thing about the used-car industry is that it’s full of characters. And they’ll all be there that night.
See you on November 30! And if you want to get the most out of the night, make sure you’re up for an award or two. You can enter here, or get some more details – and look again at the award categories – by clicking here. As someone very clever once said, you’ve got to be in to win it. And nothing will make that free booze go down better than holding a full bottle in one hand, and one of our trophies in the other…
