#RTOTY11: BMW 1M vs. Audi RS3

Time 11:27 pm, August 21, 2011

img_0162SO, it’s the second day of #RTOTY11 and we’ve taken a step back in time.

As we are staying so close to the location of last year’s picture location, we thought we’d pop back to the beach for a little reminiscing.

Out of the amazing range of cars we have this year, there are two that stand out as real rivals – the BMW 1M and Audi RS3.

We decided to take the two supercar-eaters to Black Rock Sands to give them the shake down.

If this were boxing, the BMW would be the shouting, aggressive and loud brute of a fighter, hurling abuse at his slightly understated opponent.

Whereas the 1M is all about looking the part, the Audi is more about getting on with the job and waiting to deliver a perfect KO punch. On these Welsh roads, there isn’t much between them at all.

The Audi is surefooted and easy to drive very quickly, where as the 1M needs more input to keep up. Taking these middleweight fighters out for a blast has been a real highlight of the trip so far.

We got to the beach – where you actually drive on the sand and it is even more apparent how much more lairy the BMW is. With traction off (well it would be rude not to…), the 1M is sideways everywhere and pure, undiluted fun.

In the Audi, however, it is a much more subtle affair. The choice is quick and fun, or quick and easy. There are two completely different drivers who would be looking at these cars…

We took some photos, and all eyes were on the BMW. In burnt orange, and sporting huge CSL style wheels, it is a pleasure to look at. Next to the Audi, I really think there is no comparison in terms of looks.

While we’ve been getting all excited about these sub-£50k cars we nearly forgot about what we will be driving tomorrow. Well, for a minute at least.

We’ll be up at 3:30am on Monday to drive to Ferrari in Slough, then on to Gaydon and Aston Martin. To say we are bringing home the bacon is an understatement – we’ll returning to Wales with a 458 Italia, and the new Virage.

With the arrival of these heavyweights, our fellow residents at the holiday park we’re staying in will have even more precious metal to stick their thumbs up at. If we’re the centre of attention now, things might be about to get a little worse…
