THE world’s largest car maker Toyota is recalling a whopping 6.4m cars globally over a raft of safety issues.
It’s one of the largest recalls to have ever hit the global car industry and concerns faulty steering columns, seat railings, windscreen wipers, engine starters that pose a fire risk and drivers’ side airbags not deploying properly in a crash.
More than 27 global Toyota models are affected including the popular Yaris supermini, Rav4 SUV and Hilux pickup. Some 825,000 vehicles in Europe will be recalled – 35,000 of which are UK cars.
The carmaker said it was not aware of any accidents relating to the faults.
Toyota said: ‘Vehicle owners will be contacted by Toyota within the coming weeks by post or telephone and asked to make an appointment to bring their car to their nearest Toyota Centre, in accordance with DVSA guidelines.
‘Customers can check whether their vehicle is affected using a registration look-up function in the owners section of the main Toyota website.
‘If owners require additional information they can contact Toyota Recall Helpline on 0800 1388744.’
It’s the second Toyota recall this year – in February the carmaker announced it was to recall 1.9m Prius models over speed control concerns.
