Watch dramatic rise and fall of best selling new cars charted in our exclusive interactive graphic

Time 11:40 am, August 12, 2020

Car Dealer has charted the rise and fall of the most popular new cars in the last 12 months in an interactive graphic.

Laying out the most popular cars sold every month from July 2019 to July this year, the graphic clearly shows the barren new car sales months of the national coronavirus lockdown.

Created with official SMMT data, the data shows how the most popular cars have changed position every month.

You can stop the graphic using the pause button or restart it from the beginning – or use your mouse to slid the arrow across the months to slow it down.

It’s fascinating to watch how the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Golf battle it out for the number one spot.

And then, as lockdown begins, the sudden dramatic rise to the number one spot by the Tesla Model 3 – with the Jaguar I-Pace in a close second.

In July, the Vauxhall Corsa took the number one spot as dealerships enjoyed their second full month of reopening.

The new city car from Vauxhall clocked up 5,455 registrations – narrowly beating the Ford Fiesta into second place by just 34 sales.

The Ford Fiesta, which has jostled for the top spot in the last 12 months, sold 5,421 models in July and was closely followed by the Focus registering 4,981.
