Green confusion endemic

Time 9:40 am, July 17, 2008

010806jan.jpgYOU probably already know this: 85 per cent of motorists do not understand car emissions and greener motoring.

Misconceptions abound as the industry continues apace with ever-greener cars.

Research by the British Motor Show and Zurich Connect shows that 85 per cent of people don’t know their car’s emissions level, over half don’t know its tax band and three in five are generally plain confused about emissions.

That’s despite over three quarters saying they care about reducing emissions!

Further analysis shows the depth of misconceptions. Most people don’t know of 100g/km of CO2 is high or low, while a sixth think, for whatever reason, water comes out of electric car’s engines.

Alarmingly, four per cent of people think electric cars produce battery acid, and that a hybrid is two cars welded together…

While the research was primarily done to promote the green side of this year’s Show, it does show the level of misinformation out there. Customers may want to go green, but large numbers either don’t know how, or are completely ill-informed about how to do so.

Looks like it’s up to the car dealer again to put them right…
