Audi is looking to the future after unveiling its first ever hybrid supercar, but the model still has a few nods to the past.
Called the Nuvolari, Audi says the the car has been named after Italian racer Tazio Nuvolari, who was known for his ‘single-minded will to succeed’.
Combining a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 with three electric motors and a compact battery, the Nuvolari is Audi’s most powerful production vehicle ever, with a combined output of 987bhp.
The setup means that the car will manage 0-60mph in under 2.6 seconds, while going on to reach 124mph in just 6.8 seconds. The engine will also rev to 10,000rpm, a level which Audi says has been ‘previously reserved for motorsports’.

As with nearly all performance Audi models, the Nuvolari comes equipped with quattro all-wheel-drive, although some tweaks have been made.
This version uses ‘predictive’ technology, allowing it to anticipate a loss of grip and tweak the system to correct it. This is done through the management of the separate electric motors.
It’s all set within a lightweight spaceframe with a carbon fibre exterior, while motorsport-inspired centre-lock wheels are used for the first time in an Audi production vehicle.
Active aerodynamics also help the Nuvolari to adapt to different driving situations, with a deployable rear wing one of the key features that allows the car to tweak its downforce levels while in motion.
Inside, there’s a cabin which is focused around the driver with all key functions directly within the driver’s field of view.

The main screens also use colours which are a ‘nod to the legendary Auto Union Type C’ racer, according to Audi, while lightweight carbon fibre seats help reduce weight while still bringing plenty of support.
The Nuvolari is expected to launch fully next year with an extremely limited run of cars.
