Video: The story behind our football car

Time 2:32 am, July 27, 2010

i10-football-01RANDOM things happen when you drive a car around that looks like the BFG has inserted his football into it.

Everyone stops and stares. Most point. Some laugh. And I can tell you Gosport’s dentists have been busy because I’ve been shown more fillings in the last 24 hours than a pie man…

I really love our wacky purchase for our 911 for 2011 feature though. It’s certainly drumming up some attention and it actually drives perfectly well – once you’ve hoisted the seagull-capturing net up out of the way.

If you haven’t been paying attention, we secured the mad i10 – which is covered in Astro Turf, has a gigantic former ships radar made to look like a football bolted through (not on) the roof and goalposts attached to the bonnet – as our latest step on the ladder towards a Porsche 911.

We’re attempting to trade up to the German supercar in aid of motor industry charity BEN. Once we’ve acquired and sold the Porsche we’ll be handing over the entire pot to the worthwhile cause.

Yesterday I spent the day at the local football ground shooting the pictures for the next issue of the mag with snapper Matt Richardson.

Hyundai’s PR manager Tom Barnard – the man that managed to convince us buying this car from him was a good idea – also came along to explain how it got to look like it does.

It turns out our car was formerly loved by Jeremy Clarkson, Tiff Needell and The Stig! If that doesn’t make it more sellable then I’ll take a bite out of the grass seats…

Anyway, here’s Tom chatting to us about our awesome car. We’ll be using the video in the eBay listing that goes live this Saturday alongside a PR offensive that’ll hopefully drum up some interest – and, if we’re really lucky, a buyer!
