THE VOLVO V40 has been named as Co-op Insurance’s safest used car for the third year running.
The Co-op Insurance Safest Used Car Awards are run in partnership with Thatcham Research and celebrate typical family cars with high safety ratings.
Having won first place in both 2016 and 2017, the Volvo V40 fitted with the Driver Support Pack was named 2018’s winner as well, based on an analysis of a wide range of family cars, all of which are required to have a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, CO2 emissions of no more than 120g/km and a used price point of less than £15,000.
Cars that meet the qualifications are then further evaluated on crash worthiness – including ratings for adult, child and pedestrian protection – and the availability of autonomous emergency braking (AEB).
Not only does the Volvo V40 comes with AEB as standard, but it was the safest car tested by Euro NCAP when it was assessed in 2012, with an unprecedented safety assist score of 100 per cent. It was also the first car in the world to be fitted with a pedestrian airbag to help protect people on foot if they are struck by the vehicle.
As a bonus, the Driver Support Pack adds range of advanced safety aids, including pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and blind spot assist.
Nick Ansley, head of motor insurance at Co-op Insurance, commented: ‘We wanted to create a clear list of the top 10 safest used cars for families to enable families to make informed decisions when it comes to buying a used car.
‘We’re pleased that the Volvo V40 with the safety pack has topped the list once again, for the third year running, providing an affordable choice that will keep families safe.’
Commenting on the award, Bruce Greenwood, used car programme manager for Volvo Car UK, said: ‘Winning this award for the third year in a row is a fantastic result for Volvo.’
