Car dealer defies market doomMOTORPOINT is bucking the car sales recession trend – the firm has revealed that festive sales are up a third.

However, it is nearly-new cars that are winning business. New car sales slumped to an all-time low.

Sales for the car supermarket have increased by over 31 per cent during December. This is despite the public switching attention from car buying to Christmas.

Demand in specific regions were even more positive. Sales in Scotland were up by over 38 per cent. Wales recorded nearly a 40 per cent increase.

Demand at Motorpoint’s East Anglia retail site jumped the most. It was up 42.5 per cent on 2007.

David Shelton, MD of Motorpoint, said: ‘Traditionally, December is a slow time for car sales, as families focus their energies on Christmas instead.

‘But that hasn’t been the case in 2008, with sales at record levels, and showing no signs of slowing down as we head into the New Year.’

He revealed that it is nearly new models that are selling in record numbers. New car sales dropped to a record low of just 4 per cent.

Sales of medium-sized family saloons have accounted for almost a third of all vehicles bought during December.
