Growth to slow and unemployment to jump to two million, says CBI

UK economic growth is set to falter and unemployment will worsen as the conflict in the Middle East and rising energy costs weigh on consumers and firms, new forecasts have warned.

Influential business group the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) warned that around 200,000 more Britons are on track to become unemployed in a gloomy outlook for the state of the economy.

Its latest economic forecast predicted that UK unemployment will rise to 5.5% this year, which would represent around two million people. UK gross domestic product (GDP) will slow from 1.4% growth last year to 1.1% in 2026 and then 0.9% in 2027.

Tate & Lyle agrees £2.7bn US takeover in latest blow to London market

Sweetener and ingredients firm Tate & Lyle is the latest British firm to fall into foreign hands after agreeing a £2.7bn takeover deal by US rival Ingredion Incorporated.

The deal will see Illinois-headquartered Ingredion pay up to 615p per share for London-listed Tate & Lyle, comprising 595p in cash plus dividend payments.

It also raises the spectre of job cuts, with Ingredion cautioning a review of Tate & Lyle’s operations could lead to ‘material’ job cuts among Tate & Lyle’s workforce as it looks to save around 130m US dollars (£97.5m) a year by the end of 2030 following the takeover.

Badenoch to call for public sector equality rules to be scrapped

Rules requiring police officers, nurses, and teachers to consider equality issues when they carry out their day-to-day work should be scrapped, Kemi Badenoch is to say.

The Conservative Party leader will set out plans to scrap the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) in a major speech on Tuesday, as part of a wider overhaul of the Equality Act.

The address comes just a week after a political row broke out over whether the police response to the murder of Henry Nowak in Southampton last December was influenced by equality law.

Fifth of drivers ‘cutting vehicle use or household spending to pay for fuel’

Nearly a fifth of motorists are having to cut vehicle use or household spending to pay for fuel, research from a government-backed body indicates.

The Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) found that 17% of drivers said they can afford fuel, but sometimes have to cut vehicle use or household expenses to pay for it, while 2% said it was simply unaffordable for them.

Three-fifths (60%) of drivers surveyed said they were concerned by the cost of fuel, while just over half (51%) said they knew which petrol station close to their home offered the cheapest fuel.
