Victorinox Rescue Tool

Time 6:00 pm, December 20, 2008

THERE are some gadgets you hope you never have to use – but are reassuring to have around all the same. The Victorinox Rescue Tool is certainly one of them.

Designed to get you out of a car in an absolute emergency, it’s packed with tools to help you smash, cut and break your way out.

The luminous yellow and red pouch is supposed to be easy to spot in the dark and has a belt hoop so you can mount it within easy reach somewhere in the car. The tool itself is luminous yellow and feels superbly made.

The seatbelt cutter blade can be opened one handed with a large loop that lets you pivot it open and it’s super sharp.

We simulated cutting a seatbelt by rolling over an old tea towel and it ripped through the material with very little pressure.

There’s also a serrated lock blade, which is equally sharp, and a saw that’s designed to cut through shatterproof glass – it made light work of wood and tough plastic.

Our only complaint would be the fact the saw doesn’t slot home perfectly every time, often catching on the body.

Other goodies include a crosshead screwdriver – usefully full-sized, not flat like rivals – a serrated lock blade, punch, reamer, tweezers and a keyring.

Price: £59.95
