Following the DS3, the DS4 is Citroen’s next model to wear the premium badge. DUNCAN CHAPPELL has driven it.
WHAT IS IT?
It is a long list of things: A hatchback, a coupe, a family car, a sporty car, a crossover – but most of all it is a statement. Voted ‘Most Beautiful Car Of The Year’ by more than 60,000 web users, this mid-sized culmination of all things to all (stylish) men is full of design, some good, some bad. A stylish equivalent to the C4 then.
WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?
There is a full range of units to choose from. Diesels are either 1.6 or 2.0-litre. The petrol engine is a 1.6-li tre ranging from 120bhp to 197bhp in the top end THP 200. Out of the two, the diesel makes much more sense with better economy, and with the 160bhp unit, enough power to keep you happy. The petrol isn’t fast enough and too harsh with no performance compromise to make it worth it, but it makes a good noise!
WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE?
There are three trim levels to choose from: DSign, DStyle and DSport. The tested mid-range DStyle gets a set of 18s, chrome grille surround and rear parking sensors. Inside, there is a leather steering wheel, auto digital air con, Bluetooth and USB connection. Buyers should avoid the bigger 19s on the DSport if they value their spine.
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
Solid, reassuring and safe. The cockpit design gives you a great level of comfort and safety. On the road, although not particularly inspiring, it is well-rounded and compliant.
If pushed too hard, the raised ride height feels cumbersome and stodgy, but drive normally and it’s a pleasure. Plenty of punch from the diesel is useful in town and on long distances.
WHAT DO THE PRESS THINK OF IT?
What Car? thought the new hatch- cum-coupe was a ‘good-looking alternative to the conventional family hatch’ but that ‘coupe-like looks don’t come cheap, and show that you value style way above practicality and comfort.’ The Daily Telegraph said that ‘Citroen’s only problem is how poor their standard cars look in comparison’.
WHAT DO WE THINK?
There is no doubt that Citroen is pushing the premium DS range in a more practical direction, which will appeal to new customers. It’s also clear that the DS4 is stylish and quirky and has a premium, luxury factor attached to it – which we like. But as a package, it’s not so successful as we’re not sure what it is trying to be.
