It has also been revealed by Pendragon’s chief executive, Trevor Finn,  that the deal was originally planned and announced in 2007, but the economic climate postponed this.

Gerard Nieuwenhuys, Sytner’s managing director said: ‘We are delighted to have the opportunity of acquiring an exciting BMW and MINI business.  We look forward to welcoming the employees and customers of BMW and MINI Maidenhead to Sytner in the New Year.’

Pendragon are keen to point that their remaining BMW operations are not affected, and that the firm enjoys a very strong relationship with BMW. Proceeds from the sale will be used to reduce group borrowings.

Tim Abbott, BMW Group managing director, said: ‘We enjoy a strong relationship with Pendragon and its dealerships are doing a good job for us in the north of England.  While the company has undertaken some market consolidation in the south, we would not rule out the possibility of working together in another area of the country should a suitable opportunity arise in the future.’
