PEUGEOT’S proposal to buy General Motors’ European operation, including Vauxhall, will be discussed in the Commons.
The Commons Speaker granted an urgent question on the matter to Ellesmere Port and Neston Labour MP Justin Madders today.
The move came as a Downing Street spokesman confirmed that Prime Minister Theresa May was planning to meet Peugeot’s bosses but indicated that a time and date for the meeting was yet to be fixed.
Asked whether the PM would like to see assurances about the future of Vauxhall factories in the UK, the Downing Street spokesman said: ‘We are getting slightly ahead of ourselves here.
‘This is a very tentative and very early stage. What we have been clear on is our determination to see Britain’s important automotive industry continue to flourish.’
Unions have called for job and investment assurances for the thousands of UK workers who would be impacted by any take-over.
