TODAY is the day that Porsche opens the order book for their plug-in-hybrid 918 Spyder super sports car.
But that order book is only limited to 918 cars to ‘ensure exclusivity’ of the revolutionary car, says Porsche.
The concept car gained such a good customer response at the Geneva Motor Show last year, Porsche decided to put the sports car into production.
Boasting a 500bhp, V8 engine and assisted by two electric motors which produce 218 horses, the car promises to offer the Porsche experience while being a lot more greener. The car also takes ‘only’ three hours to charge.
That means the car gets to 60mph in a whisker over three seconds, a top speed of ‘no more’ than 199mph, and an MPG figure of 94.
Porsche has also gone to great lengths to make the land-mark car look like a traditional Porsche. The firm says the 918 Spyder has been modelled on the Carrera GT, the RS Spyder and the iconic 917 racer. However, unlike the 2010 concept car, the production version features a manual roof system with removable roof panels that can be stowed in the front luggage compartment.
Production of the new Spyder will begin – very specifically – September 18, 2013 with deliveries commencing November 2013. Price? Around £565k.
Meanwhile, Porsche has also revealed that it’s offering every customer placing an order of the 918 Spyder the exclusive opportunity to acquire a 911 Turbo S ‘Edition 918 Spyder’.
Also limited to 918 units, the car is based on the 911 Turbo S but with added ‘individual features of the 918 Spyder.’ That means extra special bits including the badge on the glovebox bearing the same number as the 918 Spyder the customer has ordered, and the option of the car bearing the same colour as the shade chosen for their 918 Spyder.
The special edition 911 Turbo S is now also open for orders with deliveries starting in June. The coupe comes with a price tag of £125,865, and while the cabriolet is priced at £133,553.
