fiesta-stFORD blacked-out the windows on its Fiesta ST Concept  to prevent previewing the new Fiesta’s interior.

Speaking exclusively to Car Dealer, Ford’s executive design director Martin Smith said he and his team tinted the windows on the Frankfurt show car to prevent giving the game away.

A re-freshed Fiesta is set to be introduced soon with changes to the exterior and interior – and the Fiesta ST Concept would have given an early glimpse of the new cabin.

‘A lot of people have said to me the Fiesta ST Concept looks really different from the standard Fiesta. It isn’t – but it does show off some of the exterior changes which will appear on the face-lifted Fiesta,’ said Smith. ‘Those include different front wings and headlamps, but we didn’t want to show off the interior just yet.’

Making little changes to the Fiesta is the way Smith keeps the evolutionary process in motion. ‘The Fiesta is like the Porsche 911,’ he said. ‘How do you update it with new features but also keep it in line with its familiar identity?’

‘We have had real problems with the Fiesta – with each new generation we want to introduce new features but we have had to keep it looking similar so people will say ‘Oh, that’s a Fiesta’.’
