McLaren range to be fully hybrid by 2025

Time 1:43 pm, July 13, 2018

MCLAREN is to make exclusively hybrid vehicles by 2025 while also introducing 18 new cars over the next seven years.

The British firm revealed the plans as part of its Track25 road map, which will also see it develop a battery system capable of superfast charging as well as completing 30 minutes round a racetrack on a full charge.

The manufacturer has previously produced just one hybrid vehicle – the P1 hypercar introduced in 2013 – which will also receive a successor within the next seven years.

The 18 new cars will be entirely new models and derivatives, although McLaren didn’t specify exact numbers for each.

The possibility of expanding into the SUV market appears to have been ruled out for now though, with McLaren insisting its focus will remain on developing mid-engined sports cars.

Mike Flewitt, McLaren Automotive’s chief executive, said: ‘Everyone at McLaren Automotive remains constant in their focus of designing and crafting the world’s best drivers’ cars.

‘True to McLaren’s spirit, however, our ambitions continue to grow and our £1.2bn Track25 business plan, which covers 18 new models including a new McLaren P1, is clear proof of that.

‘We are a luxury brand that is committed to investing in innovation, whether that’s in the development and manufacture of our own carbon-fibre tubs as part of a new £50m British-based production centre, new powertrains with our entire range due to be hybrid by 2025, or the deployment of technology to enhance the driving and owning experience.’
