MITSUBISHI Motors in the UK has released a video showing Boris Johnson test-driving the new Outlander PHEV in Tokyo.
The Mayor of London unveiled the new version of the plug-in hybrid in the Japanese capital, after which he took it for a spin, accompanied by Lance Bradley, Mitsubishi’s UK managing director.
In the video, Johnson, a keen advocate of low-emission vehicles, praises the car’s ‘unbelievably’ smooth ride and handling.
He is also taken with the fact that the Outlander PHEV costs the same as its diesel counterpart, once the plug-in grant is taken into account.
At this week’s UK media launch of the new car, Bradley explained that Johnson got in touch with Mitsubishi after noticing lots of examples of the Outlander PHEV on the streets of London.
‘He wondered if he could do anything for, or with, Mitsubishi,’ Bradley explained. ‘So we asked him if he would mind unveiling the new car. The timing worked quite well and he was delighted to do it. He was quite a character, as you can imagine.’
Outlining the benefits of new Outlander – the diesel version is being launched at the same time as the PHEV – Bradley said: ‘We have the best-selling PHEV on the market and we think that’s because it has the best combination of advanced technology and practicality. It has superior performance, economy and fuel efficiency.
‘It’s an outstanding mid-size, four-wheel-drive proposition.’
