Brits dominate early voting in Autocar’s hunt for the best new car

Time 10:21 am, March 30, 2016

SEVEN cars that have been made or created in Britain are currently among the top 10 vehicles in contention for the title of Autocar Readers’ Champion.

The poll to find the best car currently on sale in the UK opened last week and closes on Wednesday, April 6.

Voting has been remarkably tight, so any one of the top 50 cars in contention still has a chance of being crowned Autocar Readers’ Champion at the new-look Autocar Awards, which take place after CDX on May 24 at Silverstone.

The top 10 with a week to go features the following cars, in alphabetical order:

Bentley Bentayga
Citroën Grand C4 Picasso
Jaguar XE
Land Rover Discovery
Lotus Elise
McLaren 570S
Morgan 3 Wheeler
Range Rover Sport
Tesla Model S
Volvo XC90

Other Brits in the list include the likes of the BAC Mono, the Ariel Atom and its all-terrain equivalent, the Nomad, and the Caterham Seven 620S.

They are up against big names from around the world, such as the BMW 3 Series and M235i, the Ferrari 488 GTB and F12, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. As well as the luxury cars and supercars, models such as the Ford Fiesta ST, Mazda 3 and Volkswagen Up are in contention, too.

Jim Holder, editorial director of Autocar, PistonHeads and What Car?, said: ‘With so many fantastic cars from around the world in contention for the title of Autocar Readers’ Champion, it is great to see the Brits doing so well in initial voting.’
